Both calling and listening.
Suggesting people here on Indymedia should call 6pr in my book would warrant a lifetime ban.

Cuddles is right, Ive read "The Ultimate Activist" by FW Cuddles. Calling 6PR does warrant a lifetime ban. Trying to let other people know what's going is totally counterproductive, there's no-one out there who's going to listen or get angry or do anything about it is there. Chapter 2 states, "When undertaking an Action, never, ever try and get your message out to anyone except those you know support you, otherwise you might have to argue a coherent case for your cause." Further it states that "You would be much better off eating two cans of baked beans, wait for three hours, then bend over with your backside to a mirror and strike a match every time you fart." Wise words from FWC.

it's gone |

Beckley is gone. They cleared it with bulldozers today. I heard two eyewitness accounts. 2 activists arrested... i can hardly contain my rage or sorrow... I can only imagine how the crew who have been camping there are feeling right now... I can't believe that's it. It's gone... excuse me now while I go and blast Public Enemy's "Fuck Da Police" from my stereo...

That's pretty sick, I hope it was filmed for future generations to see. Good on the crew for being there. I heard it on ABC today, although my heart sank when it was announced the cops were in at least I heard there was resistance from people willing to stand for what's right.

Don't blame da coppers |

It's Main Roads, The Minister Alanah McTeirnan, The Premier Gallop and anyone else who allowed a bypassing of regulations in order to pave an amazing piece of bushland.
I was lucky enough to spend some time there in the last 3 weeks.
Cops just doing what they're told on this one. It's the Government that sucks (once again) ...

But those that uphold the agenda of the elite must also be held accountable for their actions...

Okay then, if people dont want me to blast "Fuck Da Police" from my stereo (coz the cops aren't to blame, ostensibly), I'll just chuck on "Fight the Power" instead. There's a public enemy song for every occasion.
I just can't believe that they could get away with this so easily, and so swiftly. Bang. That's it.
The struggle continues.
P.S. You peeps all HAVE to watch "I Heart Huckabees". It's one of the best films I've ever seen. In the movie, they too were trying to save a piece of urban bushland, but all they ended up saving was a rock. And in times when they're all down, they go and sit on the rock and contemplate... and think... well, at least we saved the rock.

McTIERAN IS A FUCKING WITCH. |

McTiernan is a fucking witch and she need needs to be told.
Man. I saw the whole thing. The heroic resistance of G and J (not sure if I can use names here) and there arrests, and fuck me if I didnt see it, but it was like even the trees where resisting. The grand old lady at the corner groaned and struggled and for a while was defeating the big cat as it tried to send her aged old limbs to the grave.
Alas.
Seriously man. This was so fucking heartbreaking to watch, and even more heartbreaking we didnt have the lockons etc to fight back beyond our two brave ecowarriors that got arrested for there struggle.
I'll post a less emotive account later on.

For what its worth;
The cops where actually surprisingly good considering the numbers. Its the NVA thing again. We let em know pretty early on not to expect biffo from us and they believed us. There where two arrests, but no scuffles or anything. The two arrestees went willingly and the cops seemed to of dished out the minimum charges available to em. There was one asshole out of the 30 that thought it'd be a bit fun to dish out some heckle, but even the other cops thought it was he was a little overboard.
Sure the cops are minions of the bosses, but theres no point here fingering the blame on em here. The bosses put the order thru and didnt even have the fucking courage to turn up and stand by there actions.
I prefer a class analysis of the situation that sees that this is the fault of the bosses, not the workers.
Eitherway. We where not there to fight the revolution. We where there with my local community to bear witness and try and halt the destruction of some bushland that means so much to folks like me who grew up with it.
Positively, if anger is felt, direct it to Allanah, Judy edwards, the main roads dept and the Bosses at the construction company. Any one of them could of intervened to stop this, but didnt.
It wasnt a total failure. Last time we looked , the backup plan to save the big mofo mari at the back was effective. And far out man; We have a wild new tactic (stormwater drains!)

As you suggested in several meetings Shayne, I think I have to agree with you that it's a very dangerous thing to do. At the very least, we should do some serious research on confined space safety issues. In hindsight, I have no regrets because nothing went wrong but I admit I was pretty foolhardy. I would probably do the same, given my time over but I would also make the effort to do some research first.
The TRG guy said the same things you did about gases etc. and he was qualified in confined space rescue.

Our children will weep |

Future generations will look back on the stupidity of our actions and weep.
I dropped by the camp a few weeks ago. The protestors were great - huge cred to them for fighting the fight. With all the redneck wankers hurling driveby abuse I am extremely impressed they stuck it out.
Go listen to some Pennywise or some SOAD for more powerful music about Govt/Corporate bullshit.

Could we have cloned Beckley bushland? |
| by Cuddles |
2005-03-18 11:02 AM +0800 |
Beilby is right. Our children and grandchildren will truly weep recognising our generation's folley. Hopefully they wont be as shortsighted and will be able to provide the solutions to the problems we have created.
There is nothing like the original thing but could this ecosystem have been moved and re-created? Were probably not at the technical stage yet to pull it off perfectly but maybe we could have given it a go.
What the fuck are you on about Cuddles?
Well could a piece of nearby "european" parkland / open space be recreated to become the Beckley Bushland?
Enormous cost and logistic problems but then what price do you put on a tree / carpark / lizard?
Could a "normal" large hectare park with european trees, swings and slides, bbq's be cleared and an indigenous area recreated by collecting the seeds, genetic stock (both plant and animal), moving topsoil and relocating the large trees? Could we genetically modify the plants to suit there new conditions?
At the least seed from this area and any area that is being threatened with clearing should be collected.
Who knows our kids and grandkids might be wanting to dig up the carpark in 40 years and grow a forrest.

Moving Ecosystems |
| by Strypey |
2005-07-07 9:17 PM +0800 |
Cuddles
While I smile at your optimism and contructive thinking the problem with 'moving' an ecosystem is rather similiar to the problem of moving a person - cell by cell. Even if we had the technology, resources and will to put it all back together in the right configuration would it still be alive?
I think a better solution would be to leave the bush where it is and put the car park where you would have shifted the bush. I suspect a plan to replace a public park with a car park would have been defeated by community resistance which is a sad indictment on people's apathy about wilderness.

We put up a pretty spirited fight. No doubt about it, but it did seem , alas, that alot of city greenys just aint interested in the hard yards unless its 5 zillion miles down south and involves BIG trees.
What that thinking misses is that its infact the scrubby bush in our city thats most endangered. Theres verry verry verry little left of swan plain scrub left, particularly the sort around the lake chain.
Alas Beckley, we hardly knew ye :(
